Throwaway Ponies Horse Rescue & Therapy. Sue Fulton

Throwaway Ponies in Rockwall, TX was founded by Karen Bander, RN, nine years ago. It's mission is two fold, to rescue and rehabilitate unwanted, neglected or abused equines that may otherwise be euthanized. TaP's go on to rehome or train the horses in thier care for use in the Throwaway Ponies therapy programs that Karen has implemented at the facility.

Lynx a recent rescue, underweight, badly foundered and with open sores over his body. Though his initial prognosis was poor, it is hoped that with proper medical care and attention, TaP's can restore him back to good health.

The therapy programs offered at TaPs are provided to sexually, emotionally or physically abused women and children to help them regain their self esteem and inturn rebuild self confidence. A new therapy program is also on the horizon for children suffering with Autism.

Karen gradually earns the trust of the abused ponies.

It is the ability of Karen and the volunteers at TaP's to turn the negativity in the lives of these animals and women & children into positive outcomes that amazes me. The time and commitment taken to turn a neglected and abused horse into a healthy, sociable, therapy horse is a huge undertaking. But manage it they do.

Frosty.

Bought on his way to slaughter and donated to TaPs. He is afraid of adults but loves children.

It is this transformation from an unwanted or neglected horse to a therapy horse, or one that is ready for adoption, that I have focussed on for my final two images. After all this is where this remarkable story of rescue begins a new chapter............thankfully.

Proof that beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places.........

May this educate us all and inspire us to do more.
